Edward Cole (JACK NICHOLSON), a millionaire company owner, and Carter Chambers (MORGAN FREEMAN), a working-class car mechanic, lead completely different lives. Their paths intersect when they share a hospital room and discover that they both have the desire to spend the rest of their lives doing everything they've always wanted to do before "leaving the village behind." They also realize that they both have a need for reconciliation with themselves, of which they were unaware.

Together, they embark on a road trip of their lives, becoming friends and learning to live life to the fullest with insight and humor. Each adventure adds a new item to their list.
